A brief review of recent economic developments in the prefecture shows Kansai International Airport continuing to expand its role as an international hub since the opening of its second runway in 2007, while urban redevelopment projects are well underway in the central-city neighborhoods of Umeda and Nakanoshima.
Meanwhile, the Osaka Bay area has earned itself the nomiker "Panel Bay" and has been the focus of global attention thanks to the construction of a succession of large-scale factories for thin flat-panel displays and related components and materials. Construction work has also begun on what will eventually be one of the world's largest solar power generation facilities, and a total of some \2 trillion (US$20 billion) has been invested in the Osaka Bay area.
Building on the positive outlook of the people, the economy of Osaka continues to grow steadily with particular progress expected in alternative energy, thin flat-panel display, and life science industries among others.
