Osaka Prefecture is situated slightly to the west of central Japan. The total land area of the prefecture is 1,893m2, which is just 0.5% of the total land area for the country (nationally ranking 46th in size), and making it a little larger than the city of London. The prefecture ranks 2nd in the country with a population of approximately 8,830,000 people, 7% of the national total, and places it on par with the entire population of Sweden. And the fact that 210,000 foreign nationals reside here (15.6% of the national total) attests to just how comfortable the living environment is.
The prefecture is in the shape of a long bow running north-south. Osaka Bay is the eastern limit of the Seto Inland Sea, which lies to the west. Surrounded by three mountainous regions, one will find Hokusetsu to the north, Ikoma and Kongo to the east, and Izumi and Katsuragi region to the south. The central portion of the prefecture is occupied by flatlands through which run two major rivers, the Yodo River and the Yamato River, giving Osaka the sobriquet - "The City of Water." Both of these rivers flow directly into Osaka Bay. Osaka is a place full of unique character and drive, where people, cities, and nature exist in harmony. |
